One of the major characters in this story is Lata. Lata came to Cardiff two months before the story takes place, and she is finding that adapting to this new country is harder than she thought. We can tell from the fact that we only hear the story from Lata’s perspective, and very clearly when we hear her opinion on the British women and when she looks out the window onto the street she lives on, when we hear that “The sky loomed large and grey over the chimney tops and television aerials. The background very much reflects on how Lata is feeling; she describes the weather as grey and rainy. She doesn’t know any of the neighbours and she “was too afraid to befriend them, not knowing if she would be welcomed, and not bothering to find out”. The environment creates an atmosphere of unfriendliness, when she described the grey clouds and the flickering lights on the parking lot of Atlantic Wharf, compared to the colours and the warmth she uses to describe India. This gives the reader a very clear indication of the characters thoughts.
The title of the story, Dusk over Atlantic Wharf, reflects on the main characters feelings towards the new country and the position she is in. She’s left everything she has ever known in India, and she has a hard time coping with the different culture of a new country.
Based on all of this, the themes of this story are cultural differences and adapting. It shows how difficult it can be for someone to move to a new culture that is so different from the one they’re used to.
